The Pumpkin Spice Audit

Reading Labels ยท 4 min read ยท from the rootd learn library

Every September the grocery store turns orange. Here's the label-reading truth behind the season.

First: 'pumpkin spice' traditionally means the SPICES for pumpkin pie โ€” cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove. No pumpkin. A pumpkin spice product can be completely pumpkin-free and honestly labeled, because the spice blend is the reference [1].

Second: in many pumpkin-flavored products, the flavor arrives via 'natural flavors' plus a lot of sweetener. Coffee-shop pumpkin drinks often carry around 50 grams of sugar in a large โ€” meaningfully more than the American Heart Association's suggested daily cap of about 25g for women and 36g for men [2]. One drink, two days of budget.

Third, the fun twist: canned pumpkin itself is one of the best products in the store. One ingredient, loads of fiber and vitamin A, scores beautifully. The season's mascot is genuinely healthy โ€” it's the costume products wearing its name that need reading.

How to audit any pumpkin product in ten seconds: (1) Does the ingredient list contain actual pumpkin, and how high up? (2) Where does sugar land on the list, and how many aliases does it use? (3) Is the pumpkin doing the flavoring, or are 'natural flavors' and syrup doing the work?

Enjoy the season โ€” just know whether you're drinking pumpkin or drinking marketing with cinnamon in it.
